Chapter Twenty-Five

EKOS REMAINED ASTRIDE Cheron long after they were both spent. Cheron, for his part, had nothing intelligible left to say. Had he opened his mouth, he probably would have babbled incoherently for the goddess’s mercy. Would he have felt warmth or a stinging burn on his chest if he’d asked? Cheron didn’t know. But he was content now, at home in his lover’s embrace.

“Regrets?” Cheron asked.

“No,” Ekos eventually said. “Confused. Also tired.” To support the claim, he let out a massive, jaw-popping yawn. “Let’s go get washed up.”

Cheron followed Ekos toward the sound of rushing water. A natural spring trickled in the middle of the cave, flowing into a pool. Ekos got to the edge and dipped a toe; instantly after, he drew back, hissing and clattering his teeth in a way that was dramatic to the point of theater.

Ekos said, “People can’t bathe in boiling water, I assume?”

“No,” Cheron confirmed and laughed. “I’m afraid not. You’d have boiled bear for dinner.”

“Drat. Well, you’ll have to rub me to keep me warm.”

Grinning broadly, looking forward to more intimacy, Cheron said, “Deal.”

Tapestries, most depicting dragons, lined the walls of the bath. While they washed each other, Cheron studied the designs. The one Cheron stood in front of illustrated a village scene that would have been tranquil if not for the massive beast breathing fire over the sylvan landscape.

“Ah, Great Aunt Anna. She was a fearsome gal. Loved snakes and a good barbecue.”

Cheron recoiled.

“Not barbecued people. We dragons have better taste than that.”

“How did you manage to turn back?” Cheron asked.

“Hm?”

“Into a dragon. How did you get the collar off?”

The swagger returned. Ekos smirked and said, “I stole the key from Sinnac when he bound me in his chamber. I knew Isa would confirm the story about the diamond. I knew he’d take me to his chamber to torture me; it’s the same as sex for him. I only hoped I could use his cruelty to my advantage.”

“Bravo.”

“Thanks.” Ekos got out of the pool and gave the praise a slight bow, bending his knee and turning his hands up in the air. Water dripped from his hair onto the floor. Cheron enjoyed the way channels of water cut through the landscape of his body, sliding the length of his torso in a path Cheron wanted to trace with his tongue. Ekos, as if knowing his thoughts, said, “Come back to bed.”

“Only if you insist,” Cheron said with a wolfish smile.

“Not for that. A tattoo. I want to add to your story.”

Pleased Ekos knew the function of his tattoos, Cheron beamed at the gesture, which was intimate on a new level. Much like the tapestries, his markings served to tell his history and to bind the significant people in his life to him. Ekos asking to make a contribution spoke of a greater affection than Cheron had previously dared hope for.

“Yes,” he agreed. “Do you actually have supplies here?”

“I’m a dragon. My kind are known for our hoarding issues.”

That meant yes Cheron
